Paralleling my society to the Giver
There are many examples of text from our media that parallels the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S. incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as Muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels our society.
The Edward Snowden situation and articles parallel The Giver society. Both of these societies situations have surveillance. These people are being observed just like in the book The Giver. An other example is they both have whistleblowers because Edward is telling people that their being observed by NSA and CIA and Jonas is giving/telling memories to Gabe. The last example is that Edward is telling secrets of the U.S. And Jonas is keeping secrets from his parents. These are examples that parallels The Giver.
There are more people incarcerated in the U.S than any other country and this parallels The Giver. Both of these societies situations have surveillance. For example, we are actually number one to have lots of people incarcerated. In The Giver lots of people are being “released”. An other example is when Jonas and the Giver were talking about Rosemary and her release and in the U.S, numbers of prisoners, 100,000 per population are being arrested. This shows that this information parallels The Giver.
Mexican Americans are being banned from Arizona and this parallels The Giver. For example TUSD has confiscated and continues to confiscate Mexican Americans. In The Giver the authorities confiscated the peoples memories, feelings, colors, etc. An other example is that all Mexican American books have been removed or confiscated from every class. In The Giver the people that control don’t want you to know what pain, fear, colors, love, etc is. This provides information on how this parallels The Giver.
There is a song that parallels The Giver and that song is called Harrison Bergeron. This song parallels The Giver, such as in line 18 it says Do you know what society is doing to you? That parallels The Giver because they don’t know what is going on in their society or anything. An other line of the song that parallels The Giver is line 16 it says Commemorated the day we became the same. This text parallels The Giver because they all act the same but not Jonas and the Giver because they had feelings, love, pain, color, etc. The last sentence from the song that parallels The Giver is line 34 it says And you’ll get two years in prison if you unchain me. This parallels The Giver because if Jonas goes and tells everyone what pain, love, color, war, etc… is and also give some memories to them, then the authorities or people who control, they are going to be mad because he is telling the truth and they don’t want people to know, feel, etc is. This supports that this does parallel The Giver.
In conclusion, this information proves that this parallels The Giver. It talks about Edward Snowden, incarceration, Mexican American books, and the song lyrics. This has a strong text, meaning, etc. This helps us understand what it is like in the society/community.
